Agricultural GPS, GNSS, and RTK: how they work together

Agricultural GPS, the GNSS receiver, and RTK correction are different parts of a machine's navigation system. The receiver calculates position; correction data from a reference station improves the solution. NTRIP carries that data over the internet to a compatible receiver.

What each one does

The GPS display is the onboard computer: it displays the field, guides autosteer, and records the worked area. The GNSS receiver determines position using satellite signals and the available correction mode.

RTK correction uses observations from a reference station to calculate a more precise relative position. With compatible equipment under suitable conditions, RTK can provide centimeter-level positioning. Results depend on the receiver, configuration, distance from the base, signal quality, and environment.

What affects results in the field

The distance between rover and station, installation quality, sky visibility, reception conditions, and receiver model affect the solution. The internet carries NTRIP corrections to the equipment, but does not remove technical limits between the base and rover.

Pass-to-pass deviation can cause overlap or leave gaps. The impact depends on the crop, implement, spacing, terrain, and operating strategy. Assess costs and benefits using your own field data before estimating savings.

How to choose a correction source

In Brazil, IBGE provides real-time corrections through RBMC-IP over NTRIP. Nearby station availability, access requirements, and receiver compatibility must be checked for each location. An owned base or another compatible NTRIP network may also be used.

How to confirm compatibility

Confirm your display and GNSS receiver models, whether RTK is enabled, and which correction data input the equipment accepts. For brand compatibility, visit the RTK PRO store or contact support before purchasing.
